Mandate Sex Addiction Recovery for CSAM Downloaders
The Issue
In November of 2024, a family member of mine was served with a search warrant and subsequently arrested in March of 2025. This individual, who has been mentally disabled all his life, never shared or encouraged Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), but he did download it. Since then, he has been getting all the help possible, yet the justice system still paints him as the perpetrator, seeing no differentiation between those who produce this heinous material and those like him who may have stumbled across it due to a deeper issue.
It's crucial to acknowledge that there are individuals in society, like my family member, who need extra help to overcome their struggles with addiction, rather than purely punitive measures from the justice system. This isn't an attempt to negate their actions but to recognize that treatment and recovery can often serve society better than incarceration alone.
Statistics show that treatment programs for sexual addiction can reduce recidivism rates significantly. A study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Justice published in 2014 noted that offenders who participated in treatment programs were 43% less likely to reoffend. This highlights the potential benefits of integrating therapeutic interventions into the sentencing for those found guilty of downloading CSAM.
We propose a dual-pronged approach where individuals caught downloading CSAM undergo mandatory sex addiction recovery programs while creators and distributors of such content receive stringent prison sentences. This way, we can address the root of the issue, offering recovery and rehabilitation to those affected and ensuring public safety from the true perpetrators.
By mandating therapy and recovery for those suffering from sex addiction, and severely punishing the creators and distributors of CSAM, we not only help those struggling to reintegrate productively into society but also send a strong message that the creation and distribution of CSAM will not be tolerated.
