Mandate Protective Gear for Motorcyclists

The Issue

Hi everyone,

My brother Harry is 19 and very recently had a motorbike accident luckily escaped with only a broken femur and broken clavicle. Harry at the time was wearing a protective jacket and a helmet. However, the  incident could have been catastrophic. The majority of motorcyclists don't consider how dangerous riding can be until it's too late. Riders should be legally required to wear protective clothing and boots while on the road.

Motorcycling is inherently riskier than driving a car. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die in a crash than people in passenger cars, per mile traveled. Wearing appropriate protective gear can significantly reduce the severity of injuries if an accident occurs.

Leathers, specially designed for bikers, provide abrasion resistance, reducing the risk of severe asphalt burns during a crash. They also minimize the impact on a rider's body and can prevent or reduce broken bones and other critical injuries. Unlike ordinary clothing, which offers no protective benefits, protective motorcycle clothing is essential for anyone riding a motorbike.

Countries like Spain and Italy have already introduced regulations requiring protective gear for motorcyclists, leading to a noticeable decline in fatalities and serious injuries in those regions. It is time for us to follow suit and implement similar measures to protect our riders.

Implementing laws mandating the use of protective clothing will save lives and reduce the burden on healthcare systems due to motorcycle accidents. It is a responsible step towards ensuring that all motorcyclists are protected, no matter where they ride.

Sign this petition to urge legislative bodies to make it mandatory for all motorcyclists to wear protective clothing and boots ensuring safer rides for everyone on the road.
