Mandate Periodic Tables in All Exams in Sabah

Mandate Periodic Tables in All Exams in Sabah
The Issue
Growing up in Sabah, I realized early on the importance of chemistry in understanding the world around us. Chemistry exams often demand the recall of numerous chemical elements, which can feel overwhelming and discouraging for students. The periodic table was created to serve as a reference, to help us connect chemical elements and not force rote memorization. Despite this, many examinations still expect students to memorize facts and figures without providing this vital tool.
Given the crucial role chemical knowledge plays in modern education and its far-reaching implications in fields such as medicine, engineering, and environmental science, it's imperative that students have access to the periodic table during exams. This will not only ease their test apprehensions but will also promote a better understanding of chemical concepts, encouraging a deeper learning experience rather than surface-level memorization.
Incorporating periodic tables in all chemistry-related examinations would be a straightforward yet impactful change in Sabah's educational policy. The implementation can be systematically carried out by the Education Ministry of Sabah, ensuring every school and examination board provides this resource during assessments.
There are precedence and success stories in other regions where such policies have greatly benefited students and contributed to more effective learning. Moreover, recent studies have shown that access to reference materials during studies enhances knowledge retention and application.
Let's call upon educators and policymakers in Sabah as a whole to mandate the provision of periodic tables in all chemistry examinations. Your signature can make a significant difference in shaping a more practical and learner-friendly environment for our students. Please sign and support this initiative for the betterment of our educational system and future generations.
