The Issue

After waiting nearly a year for a diagnosis of a chronic illness—a journey that for some can take decades—I finally received my diagnosis in a brief 30-minute session with a consultant I had to chase my GP for multiple times. I was handed a booklet and sent on my way. My whole life changed in that moment. My future was suddenly uncertain, and I had no emotional support to help me process this monumental shift, just a booklet filled with daunting information and phone numbers for specialists to address the physical aspect of my illness with extreme waiting times.

This is my story, but it is not unique. Thousands of individuals face the same lack of emotional support when they're diagnosed with a chronic illness. While the physical symptoms are managed with varying degrees of medical support, the emotional and psychological toll is often overlooked. Stress and emotional turbulence can exacerbate symptoms, yet our NHS  fails to provide the necessary psychological resources upon diagnosis.

Currently, patients are left to navigate the overwhelming emotional consequences of their diagnoses alone or with minimal guidance. Research has consistently shown that mental health support can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with chronic illnesses. According to the World Health Organization, roughly 15% of adults are living with some form of chronic illness, yet mental health support services are severely lacking.

It's time to change this. We urge the NHS to mandate counselling or therapy services immediately following a diagnosis of a chronic illness. By integrating mental health support into the standard care plan, we can help individuals better manage their conditions, reduce stress-related exacerbations, and improve overall wellness.

Join us in advocating for a compassionate and comprehensive approach to healthcare that acknowledges the mind-body connection. Your signature can help us make mental health support a standard part of chronic illness care. Please sign this petition to make a difference in countless lives.
