Mandate Microfiber Filters in South Australian Washing Machines

Mandate Microfiber Filters in South Australian Washing Machines
The issue
As someone deeply concerned about our planet and public health, I'm alarmed by the rising threat of microplastic and microfiber pollution—especially here in South Australia, a state known for its unique biodiversity. Tiny fibers from synthetic fabrics, released during washing, account for 35% of all microplastics in the ocean. These particles enter our waterways, harm marine life, and end up in the food chain.
A key source of this pollution is our washing machines, which release microfibers into the sewage system—half of which bypass treatment and flow into natural water systems. A proven, simple solution is mandating microfiber filters in all new washing machines. These filters can capture up to 90% of fibers and are cost-effective.
France is already leading the way, requiring all new washing machines from 2025 to have microfiber filters—a law expected to prevent hundreds of tons of pollution. South Australia can and should follow suit.
Let’s urge our leaders to act now. Sign the petition to mandate filters in new washing machines and help protect our waterways and future generations.
