Our office is aware of the rampant danger these vehicles are posing to people in our community. We believe that the best way to solve this is with aggressive enforcement and seizure of the bikes through large scale operations. Therefore, in accordance with the NYPD, dozens of illegal mopeds, e-bikes, and scooters have been confiscated on the Upper East Side. We have advocated enforcement by hiring eight new officers to the district's 19th Precinct and have added more than 30 new security cameras along the district to be used for improved enforcement of traffic and pedestrian law. We are looking to continue this trend and start curbing traffic violations and dangerous bike use in the district. I will advocate to the Speaker on your behalf to address these concerns. 

Additionally, we have signed onto Council Member Robert Holden's bill, introduction 758, that would require every bicycle with electric assist, electric scooter, and other legal motorized vehicles to be registered with the Department of Transportation and receive an identifying number which would be displayed on a visible plate affixed to the vehicle. We believe that by being able to better track and identify these vehicles, the NYPD can have further success confiscating the bikes and holding the riders accountable.

If you ever have a specific 311 case number and/or know of a particularly dangerous intersection, please let us know and our office will reach out to DOT and NYPD to increase enforcement of safety laws. 

These issues are regularly discussed at the 19th Precinct meetings, and a representative of our office is always in attendance. If you are interested in discussing the matter further with the police, I recommend attending these meetings as they are a good opportunity to air grievances.
