Through my work with HerKitss, a nonprofit I founded to provide period care kits to women and girls in need, I’ve seen firsthand how lack of access to menstrual products affects families. Many women and children rely on schools, shelters, or community programs for supplies, but these resources are often limited, or families simply cannot afford the products because they are too expensive. No one should have to miss work, school, or feel embarrassed because they cannot access basic hygiene items.

In New York City, menstrual products are still treated as a luxury rather than a necessity. Every woman and child should have access to these essential items, and insurance coverage can make that possible. Mandating coverage would help families manage monthly costs with dignity and set a powerful precedent for the rest of the country.
