Mandate Holiday Breaks for All Childcare Centres in NSW

The issue

As a dedicated childcare worker in New South Wales, I can attest to the relentless work we do throughout the year, including during public holidays. Our job is demanding and requires constant energy and attention. Yet, despite our hard work, we often don't get the chance to rest and recharge during public holiday periods.

We are calling on both private and public childcare centres across NSW to be required by law to close over any public holiday period for a maximum of two weeks. This would give all workers in our sector a well-deserved break.

According to Safe Work Australia's report on Work-related Mental Disorders Profile 2015, workers in occupations that provide care for others are at higher risk of mental stress than other professions. It's clear that regular breaks can help mitigate this risk.

Childcare workers play an essential role in society; we nurture future generations and support families by providing safe environments for children while parents work or study. However, without adequate rest periods, our ability to perform these roles effectively can be compromised.

We urge lawmakers to consider this proposal seriously - not just for us as childcare professionals but also for the wellbeing of the children under our care who deserve nothing less than our best.
