Mandate heart health screenings at age 50

The Issue

My dad passed away suddenly at just 65 from a cardiac arrest. We later learned he had undiagnosed heart disease and a blockage in his left artery. If he’d had a simple heart check, he might still be here with us today. Sadly, I know so many other families who have lost loved ones in the same devastating way. Early detection can save lives. It’s time to make regular heart screenings a priority.

Heart disease remains a leading cause of death globally, claiming millions of lives each year. Many of these fatalities are preventable with early detection and intervention. A proactive approach to heart health could save countless lives and spare families the immense pain of losing a loved one suddenly and unexpectedly.

I propose that we adopt a law requiring men and women to undergo comprehensive heart screenings at the age of 50, or earlier if there is a family history of heart problems. This policy would entail a detailed examination that includes checking for any blockages, irregular rhythms, or other anomalies that could lead to heart attacks or cardiac arrest.

Implementing routine heart screenings could mirror the preventive measures we see in place for women’s health, such as mammograms and cervical smears. These existing health checks have proven effective in catching problems early and preventing deaths.

Moreover, studies show that up to 80% of premature heart attacks and strokes are preventable. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 805,000 Americans have a heart attack each year, with a portion being their first. A screening program could identify those at risk and drastically reduce these numbers.

Let's create a healthier future where we prioritize heart health and save lives. Please sign this petition to urge lawmakers to mandate heart health screenings at age 50 and prevent unnecessary loss of life.
