Mandate Health Insurances with Federal and State Funds to be Non-Profit

The Issue

As someone who has served in the healthcare industry for many years, I have had the unfortunate experience of witnessing firsthand the terrible repercussions of profit-driven health insurance companies. I've had to help my patients overcome the unnecessary hurdles set by their own insurance corporations - hurdles that, more often than not, result in wasted time and energy. One such instance involved a young girl with chronic health issues desperately needing a surgery, which was denied due to a simple typo on the company's website.

This is not a singular-story. It's reflective of an ongoing trend within the healthcare sector where insurance companies prioritize profits over patients, pressure to reduce payments to hospitals, and deny care to members. These corporations are meant to maintain a pool of funds that can cover the cost of catastrophic health events -- funds that should be safeguarded and not distributed to shareholders at the expense of patient care.

Therefore, I propose that it should be made mandatory for all health insurance companies that offer Federal and State funded lines of business to be non-profit by nature. Any distribution of the fund to stock market trading and shareholders must be prohibited. The money should be saved to ensure adequate care to all its members, when they need it the most.

We appeal to policymakers to reconsider the very ethos of healthcare insurance and re-evaluate the current for-profit models. Our health is not a commodity to be traded or profited from, it is our fundamental right. Encourage these companies to put the well-being of their members over profits.
