Mandate Health Insurance Coverage for Egg Freezing for Both Married and Unmarried Women

The Issue

As a woman deeply committed to the ideal of giving every woman comprehensive control over her family planning resources, I raise a call to action for a critical issue. An increasing number of women are considering egg freezing as part of their reproductive planning. However, insurance coverage for this potentially life-altering process is inconsistent and, in many instances, non-existent. Access to egg freezing and IVF should be made available whether a medical procedure or illness will interfere with the possibility of becoming pregnant and/or a pre-existing health complication exists or not.

Egg freezing offers a viable reserve for the future, especially for those who may face fertility issues or choose to delay child-bearing. Yet, this medical procedure's high cost (on average $10,000-15,000 per cycle, according to The American Society for Reproductive Medicine) makes it prohibitive for most women without adequate health insurance coverage.

The bias in the insurance industry routinely covers costs related to male fertility issues while overlooking those relevant to women, undermining the principle of equal medical coverage. If vasectomies and Viagra can be routinely included, why not egg freezing, an integral component of family planning for women?

Moreover, whether a woman is single or married should not influence access to this important resource. Women's health and family planning services should be consistent across all states and independent of marital status.

Inclusion of egg freezing within the nation's health insurance coverage is crucial to ensuring every woman the option of planning her own reproductive future and making choices that best suit her personal circumstances. Every signature on this petition sends a clear message to decision makers: Women’s reproductive options should be affordable and accessible to all.

Let's bring about a change. For the sake of equality, affordability, and individual choice, we implore the relevant authorities to mandate health insurance companies to cover egg freezing for both unmarried and married women, in all states. Sign the petition today, and take a step towards this vision.
