Mandate free swimming lessons for autistic children in the UK
The Issue
Drowning is the number one cause of injury related death in Autistic children. According to the National Autism Association, accidental drowning accounts for roughly 71% of all lethal wandering incidents among individuals with autism.
Most drownings happen because a child elopes, or wanders away from supervision, and heads straight to water.
Recently we have seen in the news numerous cases of autistic children eloping and being found in bodies of water.
Again today on Wednesday the 16th of September 2026 the tragedy of three-year-old Noah Woods death weighs heavily on our hearts. He was a bright young boy from Suffolk, full of potential and promise, yet his life was tragically cut short. His drowning highlights a harsh reality faced by many families with children on the Autistic spectrum. Each year, children on the Autism spectrum are disproportionately affected by drowning incidents. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of death for individuals with Autism, accounting for over 90% of deaths associated with wandering away from safety.
There is an urgent need to equip these children with essential life skills that can prevent such preventable tragedies. Swimming lessons have proven to be a vital tool in ensuring the safety of autistic children.
Research shows that formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of drowning by as much as 88% in children aged 1 to 4 years.
🔵 Life-saving swimming skills for babies focus on self-rescue techniques, such as rolling onto the back to float and breathe until help arrives which is a crucial skill.
🔵 Roll-to-Float: Babies as young as 6 months can learn to reflexively roll from a face-down position onto their backs to rest, breathe, and signal for help.
🔵 Breath Control: Utilizing natural mammalian reflexes to hold breath when briefly submerged.
🔵 Surface Grabbing: Teaching infants to reach for and hold onto the edge of a pool wall.
🔵 Swim-Float-Swim: For toddlers over a year old, combining swimming short distances with rolling onto the back to breathe.
For children with Autism, these lessons can be life-saving, offering them not only the skills to survive but also opportunities for therapeutic benefits, enhancing their confidence and physical health.
I propose that the UK government mandates free swimming lessons for all children with Autism. Such a program would ensure accessibility for all, regardless of socio-economic background, and help eliminate barriers that prevent children from learning this crucial skill. Schools, local swimming facilities, and community organizations can collaborate to provide these lessons, ensuring that certified instructors are available to cater to the specific needs of autistic children.
By putting this initiative into action, we will not only honour the memory of children like Noah but also pave the way for a safer and more inclusive environment for all children on the spectrum. Let's take a stand and demand that steps be taken to protect the most vulnerable in our society.
Join me in calling on local councils, education authorities, and the UK government to make free swimming lessons a mandated, standard practice for autistic children. Together, we can prevent future tragedies and build a safer future. Sign the petition now to support this crucial initiative.
