Mandate Federal Prohibition of Gender-Based Price Gouging and the Pink Tax
The Issue
As a woman, I find it deeply unsettling that I am expected to pay up to 7% more for essential items. This is not just an abstract concept, but a harsh reality that many women face daily. Vendors are legally allowed to charge up to 7% more for products marketed towards women, including, but not limited to, clothing and essential feminine hygiene products. This practice is commonly referred to as the "Pink Tax".
In 2020, the California Senate Committee on Women, Work & Families reported that women in California paid on average $2,381 more annually for the same goods and services as men. Over a lifetime this amounts to an astounding $188,000 - money which could be used for education or retirement savings, or to invest and have the same opportunities as men, to diversify their income.
This blatant gender-based price discrimination is not only unfair but also contributes significantly towards economic inequality between genders. It's time we demand change from our government.
This financial inequality, chips away at women's purchasing power. Women are still earning 82 cents for each dollar a man is paid. This statistic becomes worse for women of color and other disenfranchised women. This is known, in many studies, to cause more depression and stress for women, than for men. The average, single, woman earns about $39,178 annually and spends an astounding $38,838 which leaves $340.00. Not even enough to make a healthy grocery run for a family of four, not counting, inflation and high taxation. While men's earnings are sitting at $49,525 and spending a significantly lower amount of $41,203 which leaves $8,322 remaining. Allowing men to have a major advantage over women. A slap in the face to women everywhere. Women who head their household, have 55 cents in median wealth for every dollar owned by men who head their household. (This statistic is from a 2021 St. Louis Fed data.)
We call upon the United States government to enact legislation banning all forms of gender-based price gouging nationally - including the so-called "Pink Tax". We believe in equal pricing for equal products and services regardless of who they are marketed towards.
