Mandate Day-Before Weigh-ins for Amateur MMA and Kickboxing in North Carolina

Mandate Day-Before Weigh-ins for Amateur MMA and Kickboxing in North Carolina
The Issue
As someone deeply involved in the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Kickboxing, from coaching to managing backstage, promoting events, and being an avid fan, I have seen firsthand the negative impacts of same-day weigh-ins on fighters' health and competition quality. The current practice in North Carolina allows professional fighters to weigh-in a day before their fights but doesn't extend this privilege to amateur fighters. This discrepancy is not only unfair but also detrimental to the well-being of our athletes.
Weighing in on the same day as a fight puts immense strain on fighters who have already been through rigorous training regimes. It leaves them with little time for rest, rehydration, or refueling after weight cutting - all crucial elements for optimal performance and safety during a fight.
In contrast, professional MMA and Kickboxing athletes are allowed to weigh-in a day before their fights. This extra time provides significant benefits for recovery from weight cutting; it allows more time for rest, rehydration, refueling which ultimately leads to better performances.
The American College of Sports Medicine states that "rapid weight loss often results in significant dehydration" which can lead to "decreased muscle strength" among other health risks (ACSM). By mandating that all Amateur MMA and Amateur Kickboxing Weigh-ins be conducted the day before events just like their professional counterparts we can help mitigate these risks.
This is not just about leveling the playing field between amateur and professional athletes; it's about protecting our athletes' health while enhancing competition quality. Let's stand together for fairer treatment of our amateur fighters by demanding that North Carolina mandate Day-Before Weigh-ins across both amateur MMA and amateur Kickboxing.
