As the proud owner of a uterus, I've always been keenly aware of the profound responsibilities that come with the potential to create life. Unfortunately, current legislative frameworks often place an unfair burden on women, especially when their reproductive rights are limited. If women face restrictions in accessing abortion, it only stands to reason that men should be equally accountable from the very moment life begins to take shape—conception.

Pregnancy is a journey that begins at conception, and it takes two to embark on this path. However, existing child support laws often overlook the financial and emotional burdens placed upon women during pregnancy. Child support is mandated for expenses incurred after birth. But what about the costs incurred during the nine months before birth? Medical expenses, prenatal care, and essential lifestyle changes start accumulating the moment conception occurs.

A child's wellbeing starts in the womb. Various studies indicate that maternal stress due to financial instability can have adverse effects on fetal development. Language promoting shared responsibility from conception can help ensure healthier pregnancies, leading to healthier babies and ultimately benefiting society as a whole.

This is why I urge lawmakers to recalibrate the child support system. By mandating child support responsibilities to begin at conception, we would take a significant step towards gender equality in parental accountability. This is not just an issue of fairness but one of shared responsibility.
