Mandate CCTV cameras in Australian aged care facilities

The issue

Elderly residents in aged care facilities are among the most vulnerable members of our community. As we entrust these institutions with the care of our loved ones in their twilight years, it's our duty to ensure their safety and dignity remain uncompromised. Recent incidences of neglect, abuse, and inadequate care in Australian aged care facilities have raised grave concerns about the welfare of our elderly population.

In 2022 alone, there were over 5,000 documented cases of elder abuse in residential aged care settings across Australia, many of which could have been prevented with adequate monitoring. The introduction of mandatory CCTV cameras in aged care facilities is an urgent necessity to deter potential abuse, provide accountability and transparency, and offer peace of mind to families who worry about the well-being of their loved ones.

We call upon the Australian Government to pass legislation requiring:

* Installation of CCTV cameras in all aged care corridors and outdoor common areas.
* Strict privacy protection measures within bathrooms and private personal care spaces to ensure residents' dignity is respected.
* The legal right for families to install cameras in their loved one’s room, should they choose due to concern.
* Implementation of secure access controls, guaranteeing that footage can only be reviewed in the event of a suspected incident.

These measures will not only protect our elderly but also protect the integrity of the care providers who work tirelessly every day. By mandating such oversight, we are not only safeguarding our most vulnerable but also upholding the reputation of those committed to providing genuine care. Let us act now to prevent further tragedies.

Every week, around 50 sexual assaults are reported in nursing homes. These are our parents, grandparents, partners, and loved ones — vulnerable people who deserve dignity, safety, and respect.

Silence protects abuse. Awareness creates change.

I am asking you to please stand with me, speak up, and help protect those who cannot always protect themselves. Real reform only happens when people refuse to look away.

Please watch, share, and support this petition. Together, we can demand stronger safeguards, accountability, and real protection for the vulnerable.

Sign this petition to urge the Australian Government to implement these life-saving measures. Every signature brings us closer to ensuring our elderly can live safely and comfortably in aged care facilities.
