Every day across the country, countless citizens are making what may be one of the largest investments of their lifetime - buying a vehicle. My interest in this subject might not stem from a personal experience, but it encompasses a matter of principle and honesty that affects all vehicle buyers, hence, I'm voicing this concern on their behalf.

The lack of transparency in displaying the genuine invoice price by dealerships currently leads many consumers to make decisions in the dark, unsure of the actual cost of their purchase before the addition of various hidden fees. This fosters a lopsided bargaining power, favoring the dealerships and setting an unfair playfield for consumers, a deceptive business tactic that needs to be eliminated.

In the U.S., a report by the National Automobile Dealers Association indicated a gross profit margin of 13.8% in 2019 (source: NADA Data 2019). However, without the knowledge of the original invoice price, it is impossible for customers to truly discern whether they are being dealt with fairly.

It is time for fairness and transparency in auto dealing. Mandating dealerships to display the invoice price will create a level playing field and foster a healthy trading environment that focuses on customer service and integrity rather than secret profits. This will also have a benefit to dealerships in stopping consumers from believing they can get a vehicle for less than what the dealer paid for it, especially with tariffs coming to the market.
