Mandate animal-safe salt in New York City
The Issue
As an animal lover, I have always been deeply concerned about the welfare of the animals we share our world with. In recent years, the stray animal population in New York City has been skyrocketing at unprecedented rates. Amidst this increase, it has become more evident that our actions, no matter how small they may seem, have a tremendous impact on these vulnerable animals. One of the detrimental practices we might not often think about is the usage of regular salt to melt snow, which can be harmful to animals as it causes irritation and burns to their paws and skin or cause detrimental impacts to other systems of their bodies such as their respiratory systems if breathed in or digestive systems if accidentally ingested.
Every winter, as the streets and sidewalks in New York City become laden with snow and ice, store-bought salt is heavily utilized to ensure pedestrian and vehicular safety. However, the common salt that is used can pose serious risks to the health and safety of stray animals or even regular household animals who walk over these surfaces. With an increasing stray animal population in our city, it is our moral responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of these animals by switching to animal-safe salt alternatives.
Animal-safe de-icers are specially formulated to be less irritating to pet and stray animals, and adopting their widespread use can drastically reduce the number of injuries and distress caused to these innocent creatures. Moreover, with the alarming rise in the number of stray animals, using animal-safe salt will make our city a more humane and compassionate environment for them. It's time for us to take action and stop hurting urban wildlife through inadvertent methods.
We, therefore, call upon our politicians in New York City to mandate that all stores within the city that sell salt for snow melting purposes to offer only animal-safe salt options and make it cheap and affordable and outlaw the price gouging practices of these products. This change will not only ensure the protection of stray and pet animals from harm but will also embody a step towards creating a greener and more sustainable urban space for both humans and animals alike.
