Mandate All Mainstream Surrey Schools to Establish a Sensory Room

The Issue

My own experience, along with those of many I know, has clearly demonstrated the harsh reality of untreated anxiety within the environment of mainstream schools in the UK. Despite the best efforts of staff, the primary needs of a significant number of students with sensory difficulties often go unaddressed. I believe that a key factor in addressing this crisis is the establishment of dedicated sensory rooms in all mainstream schools.

Sensory rooms, or multisensory environments, provide a safe and therapeutic space for students with sensory processing disorders. This space allows for independent exploration and naturally encourages relaxation, focus, and emotional regulation, all crucial skills for students dealing with anxiety or sensory difficulties. A study in the journal "Occupational Therapy in Mental Health" confirmed the effectiveness of sensory rooms in reducing distress and improving attention (Smith, Press, Koenig & Kinnealey, 2005).

Currently, it's both disappointing and concerning that such rooms, a proven tool in mitigating mental and sensory complications, aren't a compulsory feature in our UK schools. The inclusion of sensory rooms in every school's infrastructure would promote an inclusive, respectful, and understanding environment for all students.

In just one average-sized class of 30 students, it is statistically probable that three of those children are, at any one time, suffering from poor mental health (Green, McGinnity, Meltzer, Ford & Goodman, 2005). It is clear that no child should be left to deal with such significant challenges on their own; not when we have the knowledge and ability to make a difference.

Therefore, this petition seeks to mandate the establishment of sensory rooms in every mainstream school within the UK. By signing this, you are helping us to take a stand for the thousands of children who need more support from the education system. Please, sign and share to show your commitment to this cause.
