I am a dedicated citizen of the beautiful state of Washington, and it is my firm belief that we, as taxpayers, are being excessively taxed and our funds are being misallocated towards as yet unimportant areas that do not benefit the common citizen. In the interest of transparency, accountability, and financial prudence, it is high time for the state to be subjected to a comprehensive tax income and spending audit.

There has been a steady increase in the state's operating budget over the years, reaching nearly $56 billion for the 2019-2021 biennium, as reported by the Washington State Fiscal Office. While it is true that with the increase in the population, infrastructural needs, and public services, an increase in budget is understandable; the question arises about the efficacy and need for spending in certain areas over others.

With an audit, citizens like us can have a voice, assurance of how our tax dollars are being spent, and contribute to a more responsible government spending. This will not only shore up public trust but also contribute to the financial health of the state.
