We have just launched a game changing legal challenge in the High Court – the National Justice Project has just commenced two class actions that will argue that the 1,200 detainees remaining on Manus and Nauru are being unlawfully subjected to torture and the intentional infliction of harm. And we are seeking orders for the government must stop harming them.
This is our chance to showcase the government’s systematic program of abuse - the inadequate food and shelter, the lack of medical care, the assaults and sexual abuse, the psychological torture. All of it. We need to expose it all.
It’s going to take a huge amount of time and resources to get these cases across the line. We urgently need to fund the team to help prepare this case and to keep up the pressure. Can you chip in to expose Peter Dutton’s cruelty in court? https://chuffed.org/project/appeal4justice .
We’ve successfully brought over 130 detainees to Australia from Nauru and Manus in the past 12 months and taken Minister Dutton to court dozens of times. We have uncovered document after document highlighting the abuse and torture of asylum seekers. To date we haven’t lost an application for a medical transfer, because things are so bad. These cases give all Australians the opportunity to see the appalling state of immigration detention.
It’s been six years of hand to hand combat, case after case, getting individuals off Manus and Nauru one by one. We’ll still take these individual cases, but we need to do more, go bigger, fight harder. And these cases are the vehicle to do just that.
Can you help? https://chuffed.org/project/appeal4justice
It’s so great to have your support as we head to court this morning. It will take all of us to win this.
