Dear supporters,
Thank you for your continued support for refugees and asylum seekers on Nauru over the past years.
Tonight I’m writing with a new request at a moment when the world feels closer to the precipice of destruction than it has in decades.
We are watching a US-led geopolitical order lurch toward crisis, and Australia appears increasingly willing to follow, blindly aligning ourselves with ambitions that do not serve our national interest nor increase our security.
From Vietnam to Iraq, and now the dangerous escalation of tensions with Iran, our long pattern of uncritical alignment with Western military ventures has left millions dead and displaced worldwide.
Again and again, Australia is drawn into conflicts driven by US power and strategy, where the human cost is paid by civilians, and by ordinary families and innocent children.
Each time we follow without question, we risk deeper entanglement in wars that are unaligned with our interests. The greater the entanglement, the greater the danger. Not only to others, but to Australia itself.
That is why many Australians are now asking serious questions about AUKUS: the $368 billion submarine pact that will bind Australia even more tightly to US military strategy for decades to come.
Momentum to scrutinise — and potentially extricate ourselves from — AUKUS is now growing.
One of AWSWN’s founders, Julie Macken, is helping lead a push for an independent public inquiry so Australians can finally understand the true costs, risks and consequences of this deal.
The inquiry would be a serious examination of Australia’s defence and security policy. But she can’t get it off the ground without your support.

Public Inquiry into AUKUS
$368 Billion. Zero Transparency. Australia Deserves the Truth.
“So many questions, so few answers,” said former ALP Senator, Doug Cameron. “The Australian public deserve more than Cold War rhetoric to justify the mind-boggling expenditure associated with acquiring second-hand, and yet to be designed attack class, nuclear propelled submarines. Please donate to make this happen."
“AUKUS represents the worst defence decision since we relied on Britain to protect us in World War II,” Major General Michael G Smith AO (Ret’d)*
There has never been a more critical time to get the truth about AUKUS and what it means for our nation. The Federal Government is planning to spend $368 billion of our taxes on submarines - this will be the largest transfer of sovereign funds in our history — without answers to basic questions, like: will Australia receive the submarines we’re paying for, where will the high-level nuclear waste be stored, how many Australian jobs will this create and at what cost, and the most important question, will this make us safer — or turn us into a nuclear target?
Even a report from the United States Congress has raised the possibility that the United States may simply operate more of its own submarines out of Western Australia — while Australia foots the bill. The agreement was signed in secret without any Parliamentary scrutiny. Australians deserve the truth. This isn’t about party politics. This is about accountability.
