Dear friends of the lobsters,
Today we have an exciting update on the campaign for lobsters!
Early this month, our paper petition asking for Ontario to recognize the sentience of crustaceans under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act was submitted to the provincial parliament.
This comes after nearly 4 years of effort from our team and represents a huge milestone for animal welfare.
Notably, we also recently received a positive response from Ontario’s solicitor general noting that the PAWS Act does allow also for new regulations in the future.
Additionally, the UK government have just stated in their Animal Welfare Strategy that boiling live, conscious crustaceans is not acceptable.
As we now look forward to the government’s response, we would like to express our sincerest gratitude to all of those who have signed, shared, and supported the campaign.
GentleWays remains committed to continuing this work so the sentience of crustaceans is recognized and respected.
