Make Youth Brigades Permanent Workers in the Education Sector

The Issue

I am part of a youth brigade, working tirelessly as an educator assistant and general worker. Our roles are crucial to the functioning of the education sector, a system that never ceases to operate. Despite our significant contributions, we remain temporary workers. We call for all youth brigades to be made permanent employees in this sector.

The permanency of our positions will not only provide us with job security but also contribute significantly towards reducing unemployment rates. It is estimated that youth unemployment stands at 34.9% in South Africa (Stats SA, 2021). Making our positions permanent can help decrease this alarming figure.

Furthermore, securing our employment will ensure food security for ourselves and our families. In South Africa, approximately 11 million people experience severe food insecurity (UNICEF, 2020). By offering us stable employment opportunities within the education sector, we can work towards reducing this number and ensuring no family goes hungry.

We urge you to consider making all youth brigades working as educator assistants and general workers permanent employees within the education system - an action that will positively impact not just us but society at large Learners and teachers need our support. Please sign this petition to support our cause.
