We demand that SANRAL take immediate action towards making the N2 safer in and around the Sedgefield area.

 The recent accident at the Outward Bound turnoff from the N2, situated just outside Sedgefield, which very nearly claimed the life of an 11yr old girl, is the 15th accident that a local tow truck company owner has attended at that juncture.

Currently, there is no dedicated lane for the right turn. There is no sign to alert drivers of a right turn there. In fact, the centre line is dotted leading up to the turn-off, indicating that it is safe to overtake. 

A 2 Phase Plan must be put into place and implemented with utmost urgency. 
Phase 1 being the priority and requiring immediate corrective action. 

Phase 1:

Repaint the lines to include a dedicated right turning lane for the Outward Bound Rd. The wide shoulder here can be reduced to allow for two lanes without having to widen the road itself.

Replace the signs indicating the Outward Bound Rd on both sides of the road. These were apparently removed in 2004 and never replaced.  

The speed limit from the Swartvlei Beach turn-off all the way into town, needs to be reduced to 60km/h and there should be a permanent speedtrap camera, preferably placed near to the Outward Bound intersection, to enforce adherence to the speed limit. 

There should be signage in both directions that warn drivers that they are in a ‘HIGH ACCIDENT ZONE’ and that a dual carraigeway allows for safe overtaking in 1.5km. 
There should be signs well before the bridge on both sides saying ‘NO YELLOW LINE DRIVING’ and ‘STAY IN YOUR LANE’ as the road shoulder is often used by cyclists and yellow line driving only encourages overtaking.

The centre line should be painted solid all the way to the dual carriageway, which starts just past the Engen, coming into town from George and just past the Pine Lake turn-off, leaving town in the direction of George.

Phase 2:

 Sedgefield needs more traffic lights in town, which have the effect of calming the traffic and also allows pedestrians to cross the N2 safely. 
We are a Slow Town after all and the CBD straddles the N2.
The majority of cars and trucks using the N2 section through Sedgefield are driving at 80km/h or more. 
There should be traffic lights at the Makou Str intersection with the N2, which is apparently another high accident zone, according to the local tow truck company owner. 
The Vink Str and N2 intersection next to Spar also requires traffic lights. 

If the traffic has been sufficiently calmed within the town, then it will be more likely to adhere to a lower speed limit for the 2km stretch just outside the town. 

How many more people must be seriously injured or killed before action is taken?
