Make the Monarch Butterfly the official state butterfly of Ohio
The Issue
As a nature enthusiast and fan of Ohio’s history, I think it’s time for the state of Ohio to adopt an official state butterfly particularly the Monarch Butterfly.
Ohio is one of 16 states that do not have an official state butterfly and I believe that they deserve to have one. Ohio does have the ladybug as its official state insect however a state butterfly would be perfect to further represent our great state.
The monarch butterfly can be found in all 88 counties in Ohio, and it migrates through 3 of Ohio’s major cities such as Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland. This migration route is what I like to call the “3 C Highway”, and they are very important stops for migrating monarchs each year.
In recent years, I have worked with Upper Arlington Parks and Recreation in my community to create monarch waystations in some of Upper Arlington’s local parks, and planted lots of Ohio native milkweed to help these little flyers on their important migration. So far the waystations have been helping the butterflies continue their migration and to recharge and lay their eggs after a long flight.
The monarch in my opinion represents the beauty and charm of the great state of Ohio, and represents our state’s natural and agricultural history. Pollinators transfer pollen from one flower to another, which is essential for the fertilization of plants. This process allows flowering plants to produce fruits, vegetables, and nuts, contributing to about one in three bites of food we eat.
The monarchs themselves play an important role of pollinating in our state, and they are one example of pollinators that helps with our farms and markets in producing healthy foods for us to eat.
So I say let’s make the monarch as Ohio’s butterfly because of how well they could further represent Ohio, its history and its beauty. I believe the monarch deserves to become the official butterfly of Ohio due to their important role in our state and again they could further represent Ohio’s beauty and charm.
Stand with me and encourage others and your state lawmakers and representatives to adopt this magnificent little creature as an Ohio state treasure!
