The Issue

To many in the Tolkien Fandom, audiobooks are a vital way to explore J.R.R Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien's work. To date, many of these books have been made into audio, but Christopher Tolkien's "The History of Middle-earth" as a complete set with consistent and separate narration for Christopher and J.R.R's voices remains undone.

This is a twelve part series journey through Christopher Tolkien's amazing work to showcase his father's process in creating the Legendarium we all know and love.

Making these into audio would be a big undertaking, so showing HarperCollins and the other parties involved that the Tolkien Fandom wants these to happen will go a long way to starting the process.

HarperCollins needs to be able to see how much interest there is and they should also know that fantastic resources are already available to them through projects like The Digital Tolkien Project and other members and groups of the Tolkien Fandom.

Many of the challenges in adapting the History of Middle-earth volumes to an audio format lie in the complex structure of these volumes. The Digital Tolkien Project's HoMe Base has already begun to develop a system for handling these structural considerations, such as the identification of different text types (including but not limited to distinguishing the writing of J.R.R. Tolkien from that of Christopher). The Digital Tolkien Project and many more in the Tolkien Fandom would be eager to contribute to the development of a History of Middle-earth audiobook series.

Let's show HarperCollins that we have the interest and support to make these audiobooks happen. Share with your friends and communities!
