Together, we can help make the American Flamingo Florida's official state bird!
Florida is known for its unique and vibrant natural beauty—from its turquoise waters and sandy beaches to its lush wetlands and thriving wildlife. However, one iconic symbol of our state—the Flamingo—is not officially recognized as Florida's state bird. We believe it’s time to change that.
Currently, the Northern Mockingbird holds the title of Florida’s state bird. While it is a lovely and melodious creature, it is not unique to Florida and can be found in many other states. The flamingo, however, is a striking and unforgettable emblem that embodies the essence of Florida—vibrant, tropical, and full of life.
Why the Flamingo?
Cultural Significance: The flamingo is deeply tied to Florida’s cultural identity. From art and fashion to tourism and conservation efforts, the flamingo is a beloved symbol recognized worldwide as a representation of our state.
Environmental Importance: The flamingo’s presence highlights the importance of preserving Florida’s delicate ecosystems, including our wetlands and estuaries. Making the flamingo our state bird would draw attention to the need for continued environmental conservation.
Historical Ties: Once thought to be non-native, research now confirms that flamingos are indigenous to Florida, having existed here long before human settlement. This makes them an even more fitting choice for state bird.
Tourism and Economy: The flamingo’s vibrant image is a powerful draw for tourists, contributing to our economy. Its designation as state bird would further strengthen Florida’s unique brand and appeal.
The Call to Action: We respectfully urge the Florida Legislature to recognize the flamingo as Florida’s official state bird. By doing so, we celebrate our unique identity, support environmental conservation, and honor a species that truly represents the Sunshine State.
Join us in making this change a reality! Sign this petition and share it with friends, family, and fellow Floridians. Together, we can give the flamingo the recognition it deserves as an enduring symbol of our beautiful state.
