Make the crossway outside the Toolleen Pub safer
The issue

UPDATE – September 2026:
Unfortunately, the danger we raised when this petition was first created has once again become a reality.
Another serious collision has now occurred at the Toolleen intersection, involving two young women in one vehicle and members of a family in another. Those involved were incredibly fortunate that this collision did not result in the loss of life.
I was personally at the scene following this accident and witnessed firsthand the seriousness of what occurred. This is no longer simply a concern about what might happen at this intersection — serious crashes are continuing to happen.
Driver responsibility will always play a role in road safety, but road infrastructure must also account for human error, unfamiliar drivers and people travelling through an area for the first time. Locals may understand the intersection, but visitors and motorists passing through Toolleen may not. A safe intersection should not depend on a driver already knowing its history or layout.
We should not have to wait for another fatality before meaningful action is taken. This latest collision could very easily have ended with several lives lost and multiple families receiving devastating news. We were lucky this time. We cannot rely on luck the next time.
Every resident and patron of Toolleen, VIC, understands the grave danger posed by the crossway over the main highway outside the Toolleen Pub. Over the years, the crossway has been witness to numerous accidents, with some resulting in fatalities, and just recently, two car accidents took place within a span of two days. On one terrifying occasion, a vehicle almost careened into the main entrance of the pub, where a significant number of patrons were gathered.
As a community, we have endured enough. Those of us who live and work here, like myself, have had to sweep debris off the road, confront the tragic scenes of accidents, and bear witness to the devastating loss of life.
The crossway's perilous design and location over a busy highway necessitate urgent action. VicRoads must implement measures to make this crossway safer for everyone. Potential solutions could involve improved signage, Making the road a dog leg, traffic lights or even the installation of traffic calming devices, or the introduction of pedestrian traffic signals specifically designed to ensure driver awareness and public safety.
Statistics reveal that areas with improved road safety measures see a significant decrease in traffic-related incidents. Implementing such measures here can save lives.
By signing this petition, you advocate for vital safety amendments that have the potential to spare our community from further suffering and loss. We urge VicRoads to prioritize the safety of Toolleen’s residents and visitors alike. Let us stand together and demand change before it's too late. Please sign and share this petition with others who value community safety and preservation of life.
