The Issue

NOTE: We are not connected to Better Atlanta Transit in any way. In fact, we generally disagree with their agenda. The name here was chosen deliberately as a tongue-in-cheek reference, not an endorsement.

The Atlanta BeltLine has become one of the city’s most used public spaces. But as more people rely on the BeltLine for daily transportation, safety concerns have grown urgent.

Right now, cyclists and pedestrians share the same path. With heavy traffic in both directions, the risk of collisions is constant. There has already been a sharp rise in reported accidents and even hit-and-runs, putting residents and visitors in danger. To make matters worse, the BeltLine’s design makes it difficult for first responders to reach injured people quickly, which can turn an accident into a life-threatening emergency.

Dedicated bike-only lanes would make the BeltLine safer and more accessible for everyone. Cyclists would have a clear, protected space to ride, while walkers, runners, and families could enjoy the trail without fear of fast-moving bikes. This is about more than convenience — it is about creating a safe, responsible, and inclusive public space that reflects the needs of a growing city.

We call on BeltLine leadership and city officials to prioritize public safety and build permanent, dedicated bike lanes. The time to act is now.
