Make Swimming Lessons Mandatory in All Australian High Schools
The issue
I am writing this petition with a heavy heart and a firm belief that change is essential. I lost my closest friend at the tender age of 19 due to a drowning accident. An incident that drove home the reality - learning water safety in primary school is not enough. Often, the skill set acquired during early years is forgotten, and a lack of consistent instruction can result in a lifelong fear, or worse, a tragedy.
High schools are institutions meant to bolster personal growth and development, but they also play a significant role in imparting life-saving skills. Unfortunately, swimming lessons are still not a part of the standard high school curriculum. Ensuring students maintain the right level of proficiency in swimming and water safety over their teenage years should be prioritised.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated in 2014 that 372,000 people die from drowning every year. That's over 40 every hour. Many of these tragedies are preventable with proper awareness, education, and training. By making swimming lessons mandatory in high schools, we can better equip our young people with the necessary skills to safely navigate, enjoy, and respect water bodies.
In memory of my dear friend and for the thousands who may face similar risks, we speak up for change. We need to prepare our children not just academically but equip them with vital life skills like water safety. Join me in urging the educational authorities to make swimming lessons a compulsory part of the high school curriculum. Your signature can pave the way for a safer future for our children.
