Make Sign Language a Mandatory Component of Primary and Secondary Education

Make Sign Language a Mandatory Component of Primary and Secondary Education
The Issue
My niece and nephew, both of whom are deaf, have experienced the heart-wrenching reality of exclusion due to communication barriers. They have often been left out of parties and events, simply because people do not know how to sign. In a world where we advocate for inclusivity, it's disheartening that such incidents still occur.
In light of these personal experiences, it's high time to implement sign language as an integral part of education in all primary and secondary schools. Failing to do so continues to widen the gap and persists in the injustice towards individuals with hearing impairments.
About 1 in 5 people in the UK, or 12 million people, are deaf or hard of hearing. This makes hearing loss the second most common disability in the country.
This unwillingness to break these barriers leads to the needless isolation of a significant chunk of our population. Therefore, this petition demands that sign language learning is mandated in primary and secondary schools, to ensure inclusivity and social equality. We want our children to grow up in a world where no one feels left out because of their disability.
Support this cause and stand up for inclusivity and equity. Give your voice so others might have a chance to be heard. Sign this petition today.
