Dear Councillor,
I am writing to raise urgent concerns regarding road safety on Shelton New Road -
There are several issues that I believe should be investigated:
The road markings at the junction have become badly faded, making the layout less clear for motorists.
Vehicles frequently travel at excessive speeds along Shelton New Road.
The cycle lane is not sufficiently visible to drivers. Temporary traffic cones have been placed to try to highlight it, but this is clearly not a long-term or adequate solution.
There are concerns that the overall junction layout and visibility may be contributing to collisions and near misses.
Vehicles are regularly parked partly or wholly on the pavement along sections of Shelton New Road. This forces pedestrians, including wheelchair users, people with pushchairs, older people and those with visual impairments, into the carriageway to continue their journey, creating an unnecessary safety risk.
Pavement parking and vehicles parked close to the junction also reduce visibility for motorists, narrow the available carriageway and can make it more difficult for drivers to pass safely, potentially increasing the risk of collisions.
Given the repeated incidents and the range of concerns affecting all road users, I would be grateful if you could request that Stoke-on-Trent City Council carries out an urgent highway safety review of this location.
Could this review consider:
Repainting all worn road markings.
A review of vehicle speeds, including speed monitoring and whether additional traffic-calming measures are appropriate.
Improvements to the cycle lane, including clearer coloured surfacing, improved road markings and physical protection where feasible.
A review of the traffic signal junction and the collision history.
A review of pavement parking and whether additional parking restrictions or enforcement are required to keep footways clear and maintain safe visibility for all road users.
Any additional measures that would improve safety for motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and disabled road users.
Residents are becoming increasingly concerned that a more serious collision could occur if improvements are not made. We all want Shelton New Road to be a safe route for everyone, whether travelling by car, bicycle, wheelchair or on foot.
I would appreciate it if you could advise what action can be taken and whether these concerns can be referred to the Council’s Highways team for investigation.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.
