Make Sanitary Products Free for All in the UK

Make Sanitary Products Free for All in the UK
The Issue
Growing up in a low-income family, I often faced the harsh reality of struggling to afford sanitary products. It was a constant battle, and I remember the feeling of helplessness when I couldn't obtain a necessity that was beyond my control. It's not fair, and I didn't choose to have periods—it's a part of my normal bodily autonomy. Sadly, this is a reality for many women and girls across the UK.
Sanitary products are not luxury items—they are essential for the health and dignity of women. Despite this, countless individuals are forced to face their periods each month without the necessary products, leading to discomfort, embarrassment, and risk of infection. No one should have to decide between buying food and purchasing pads or tampons.
Period poverty is a pervasive issue that affects nearly 1 in 10 girls in the UK, according to Plan International UK. This means thousands of women and girls are regularly missing school and work, simply because they lack access to affordable sanitary products. This all contributes to a larger cycle of gender inequality, impacting education, health, and economic opportunities.
The solution is clear: make sanitary products free across the UK. By doing so, we can alleviate financial pressure on low-income families, promote gender equality, and ensure that every girl and woman can manage their periods with dignity. Several countries like New Zealand and Scotland have already taken this progressive step with significant positive outcomes, proving that it is entirely feasible.
This change can be implemented by allocating funding to schools, public restrooms, and community centers that distribute these products freely. Moreover, encouraging private businesses to offer free sanitary items in their restrooms can foster a culture of care and support.
I urge the UK government to follow these examples and prioritize menstrual health by providing free sanitary products. Let's work together to end period poverty for good. Sign this petition to demand action and help ensure that all women in the UK have access to necessary sanitary products without facing financial hardship or stigma.
