Make PrEP Accessible in All UK Pharmacies

The Issue

As a member of the LGBT community, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced in accessing Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a critical medication for HIV prevention. Currently, PrEP is predominantly available through GUM clinics, creating unnecessary barriers and restricting access to those who might benefit from this life-saving drug. It's vital that PrEP becomes readily available and affordable in every pharmacy across the UK.

The inaccessibility of PrEP at local pharmacies means many individuals turn to online markets where there's a persistent risk of purchasing counterfeit drugs, thereby posing a significant health risk. The importance of PrEP cannot be overstated. According to Public Health England, over 103,000 people are living with HIV in the UK, and the availability of PrEP has the potential to drastically reduce these numbers.

Making PrEP available in all pharmacies, not just GUM clinics, eliminates these risks and barriers, providing a safer and more efficient means for individuals to obtain the medication. It also reinforces the value of every individual's right to choose and manage their own healthcare.

Access to PrEP through local pharmacies can be a game-changer in HIV prevention strategy in the UK. It ensures privacy, reduces stigma, and is a significant step towards ending new HIV transmissions by 2030, a target set by the UK government. Therefore, the time to act is now.

Join us in urging the UK government and health authorities to make PrEP available in all UK pharmacies. By doing so, we can make a huge difference in the lives of those at risk and help eradicate new cases of HIV. Sign this petition and help drive change today.
