The issue

The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) is not just a childhood pastime - it’s a serious, competitive sport played by millions worldwide. With official tournaments across 70+ countries, mixed-gender competition, and professional-level strategy, Pokémon TCG meets all the criteria to be recognised as an Olympic sport.

As Brisbane prepares to host the 2032 Summer Olympics, we call on the Australian Olympic Committee and CEO Mark Arbib to formally consider including Pokémon TCG in the Games. This would not only modernise the Olympic program but also engage a younger, diverse audience passionate about mental and strategic competition.

Players train rigorously, compete at international levels, and follow a tightly governed ruleset that rivals many traditional sports. With mixed-gender competition, a passionate youth following, and structured officiating, Pokémon TCG meets many of the key criteria used by the International Olympic Committee when selecting new events.

The movement is already gaining momentum at this year’s CollectFest, Australia’s first festival for collectors, where Olympic-style Pokémon TCG tournaments and training will take place - showcasing the skill, structure and spirit of the game in an official format.
