The Issue

Let's face it, periods are a natural bodily function, not a choice or luxury. Yet, those of us who menstruate find ourselves burdened by the monthly expense of sanitary products like pads and tampons. It's frustrating to continuously have to pay for something that is as involuntary as breathing. Imagine having to pay for the air you need! In countries like Scotland, period products are already provided for free. It’s time we follow their lead.

Access to these essential products is not just about comfort, it’s about dignity and equality. Not everyone can afford menstrual products, and it is heart-breaking to think that some people have to choose between buying food and buying menstrual supplies. When pads and tampons are not readily available, it can lead to missed school days, missed work, and other significant impacts on well-being and economic opportunity. This situation is completely unacceptable.

Furthermore, period poverty is a very real issue, affecting millions. According to the World Bank, about 500 million people worldwide lack adequate facilities for managing their menstrual health. This problem is present in many high-income countries, including ours. If we want to foster an inclusive and supportive community, free access to pads and tampons everywhere is a fundamental step.

The solution is straightforward: the government should fund access to free sanitary products in public restrooms, schools, and workplaces. By implementing widespread availability, we not only support individuals’ dignity but also promote public health. A simple act of policy change can uplift many lives and restore power to those affected by menstruation.

We need the government to recognize menstrual products as necessary health supplies and ensure they are freely accessible in all public and private institutions. Let us advocate for change together, for all who menstruate now and for future generations. Sign this petition to demand that our government covers the cost of pads and tampons, making them accessible to everyone, everywhere.
