Make November 1st off for Fairfax County Public Schools

Make November 1st off for Fairfax County Public Schools
The Issue
We the students of Fairfax county Public Schools have agreed that November 1st should be off of school. Having school on November 1st is disrespectful to the cultures that celebrate holidays on November 1st, and it also affects student learning.
November 1st is not only the day after Halloween as it is for some people. On November 1st many Hispanic families and students celebrate a day called the Day of the Dead. On this day families honor and celebrate the deceased. However, instead of being able to stay at home with their families and partake in this important holiday many students are forced to go to school. Another holiday that happens on November 1st is All Saints Day. On All Saints Day many Christian families commemorate all deceased people that have reached heaven. It is very disrespectful to not only the families that celebrate these holidays but also to the people who have died and are being celebrated on this day.
Another reason we should have November 1st off is that it very negatively affects student learning. On October 31st a holiday called Halloween is celebrated. On Halloween night many children go from house to house getting candy. This continues late into the night often to times such as ten or eleven pm but the day after students must get up at hours such as 6:00 am to go to school. On average children from ages six to eighteen need a minimum of ten hours of sleep. According to the National Institute of Health. Children not getting enough sleep can lead to: “impulsivity, stress, depression, anxiety, aggressive behavior, and thinking problems.” These are not the correct things to be experiencing while trying to learn. Also, if students miss something during class, then it can make students not be able to understand the material or complete assignments. This is not only bad for their grades but also mad for their mental health as struggling in school can cause a lot of stress and anxiety.
Therefore, all fcps students should have November 1st off to celebrate holidays that they cannot celebrate while in school and to let children get enough sleep to keep them healthy both in their mentally, physically, and in their grades.
-Sincerely fcps students in support of this cause
