The Issue

Families across America are being priced out of essential neuropsychological assessments — tests that can uncover learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, brain injuries, and neurological conditions. These evaluations change lives, but most families can’t afford the $4,000–$6,000 out-of-pocket cost.

Children shouldn’t go undiagnosed because of financial barriers. It’s time to make neuropsychological testing accessible, affordable, and covered by insurance.

Every child deserves the opportunity to be understood, supported, and given the care they need — yet thousands of families across the United States are being denied that chance because of one simple reason: cost.

Neuropsychological assessments are vital for diagnosing learning differences, behavioral challenges, ADHD, autism, brain injury effects, and other cognitive issues. They help families and educators create personalized support for children who are struggling. But even with health insurance, families are being told to pay $4,400–$5,500 out of pocket for these evaluations — putting life-changing help far out of reach.

I’m a teacher and a mother of a 19-year-old daughter who was born prematurely at 26 weeks, weighing only 470 grams. She has Type 1 diabetes, behavioral challenges, and was hit by a car earlier this year. Her doctors recommend a neuropsychological assessment to uncover possible neurological or cognitive issues — but like so many families, we simply cannot afford it.

As an educator, I’ve seen countless children in the same situation. Their parents know something is wrong — but without testing, schools can’t properly support them, and doctors can’t diagnose them. These children fall through the cracks, not because of neglect or lack of love, but because of a broken system.

We call on:

State and Federal Legislators to make neuropsychological assessments affordable and fully covered by insurance.
Hospitals, Clinics, and Providers to create sliding-scale or income-based pricing models.
Universities and Teaching Hospitals to expand low-cost training clinics for supervised student assessments.
These evaluations aren’t luxuries — they are lifelines. No parent should have to choose between paying rent and getting answers for their child.

Please sign and share this petition to demand affordable access to neuropsychological assessments for all families. Together, we can ensure that every child — regardless of income — has a fair chance to reach their potential.
