The Issue

I personally know someone who has been admitted to the hospital three times due to alcoholism, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Despite the critical condition, they have been turned away each time. It's heart-wrenching to see a loved one in such distress, and it's even more frustrating when companies that claim to help with alcoholism still have no access to the medications that can make a true difference.

In the United Kingdom, alcoholism affects millions of adults each year, leading to over 8.2k deaths in the year 2023 and nearly 23 million adults (47%) have experienced or has known someone with an addiction including alcoholism. Over 600 thousand people in the uk are dependent on alcohol. according to the government website and the office for health improvement and disparities, (OHID). This condition doesn't just impact the individuals suffering from it but ripples through communities, affecting families, friendships, and workplaces.

There are medications approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) such as Naltrexone, Acamprosate, and Disulfiram which have been shown to help reduce alcohol cravings and prevent relapse. However, despite their effectiveness, access to these lifesaving treatments remains limited due to high costs, lack of insurance coverage, and insufficient availability in treatment centers.

People battling with smoking addictions, death rates for smoking is 80k people yearly according to the action of smoking and heath. However smoking does not cause emotion enhancement associated with other medical conditions such as depression and anxiety. There is medications, therapy, patches, inhalers accessible at a click of a button. So why is it so difficult for people with alcoholism to recieve appropriate help?

We need a change in our healthcare system to ensure these medications are not luxuries but essentials accessible to everyone suffering from alcoholism. Health insurers should cover these medications fully, and treatment centers must be adequately supplied to meet the demand. Furthermore, there should be national awareness campaigns to educate both healthcare providers and the public on the availability and efficacy of these medications.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for comprehensive support for individuals battling alcoholism. You’re helping to push for policies that ensure medication accessibility and are joining a collective voice demanding a healthcare system that values recovery and dignity for all citizens. Please sign and share this petition to help bring life-changing treatments to those who need them most.
