Make Lincoln's waters safer for children and families

The Issue

Losing a loved one to water is a pain that lingers forever. My experience of witnessing a dear friend, who was healthy and stood 6 ft 7 in height, succumb to this tragic fate has left a permanent scar on my heart. But he's not the only one. In Lincoln, stories of young children and adults tragically drowning are heard far too often. It’s a pain that not only families but entire communities are carrying, especially when searches to recover bodies stretch painfully long.

The lakes around Lincoln, while beautiful, present hazardous conditions. Despite having warnings, these areas lack the necessary protections that could save lives, such as lifeboats and security measures. The situation is exacerbated by the poor water cleanliness and hygiene, posing health risks to those who venture into the water.

We must prioritize the safety of our community, particularly our children, by securing funding to create a new, safe environment for aquatic activities. A dedicated indoor/outdoor facility would allow kids to enjoy swimming under monitored conditions, equipped with diving boards and other recreational features safely. Alternatively, we could improve existing infrastructures to ensure they are safe and welcoming.

This is not just about adding lifeguards or placing signs; it's a call to transform recreational spaces to be thriving hubs where families can enjoy their time without fear. Immediate action will prevent more heartbreaking stories.
