In 2009, Lady Gaga released The Fame and something shifted.
Everything shifted, actually. The album went platinum six times over, winning hearts, opening minds and spawning five singles that light up dance floors to this day.
For inexplicable reasons, not one of those singles was "Summerboy".
"Summerboy" is a a fixture of iPod Nanos and Shuffles the world over. It sounds the way that summer feels - more specifically, the summer of 1985. With its shimmering synths, youthful energy and memorable melody, "Summerboy" feels old and new simultaneously. We still have the summer, after all, considering that Gaga's would-be breakout hit appears to have laid the baby blueprint for Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.
Despite its undeniable impact, "Summerboy" went nowhere fast commercially on release. It has been performed live only once: at Coachella 2007, when many of us were stuck in first grade in lieu of going for runs and having a little summer fun. Mayhem ensued this March, but "Summerboy" is one of the few nachos that Gaga did not try (and succeed) to reheat. Yet, as recession pop advances once more, there has never been a better time to propel her unfairly overlooked masterwork to the mainstream.
For these reasons and more, we, the people, demand justice for "Summerboy".
