This petition stems from a personal story, one that is unfortunately all too common. A friend, a victim of domestic abuse, was forced to leave her home on advice from the police. Despite owning 50% of the property with her ex-partner, she now faces the risk of losing her equity in the house. Why? Because they did not have a joint account for their mortgage payments.

She paid half of the mortgage into his account every month and took care of other household expenses like food shopping and furnishing. Now he's claiming unequal shares because all payments were made from his account. This is an unfair situation that could be avoided if joint accounts were mandatory when buying property.

According to The Guardian (2019), nearly 1 in 3 women may lose their homes after separation due to lack of financial protection measures such as joint accounts for mortgages. This isn't just about one person; it's about countless others who find themselves in similar situations.

We need legislation that protects individuals' rights and ensures fair distribution during separations or divorces by making it mandatory to have a joint account when buying property together. No one should lose their home or face financial hardship due to loopholes in our system.
