The Issue

The recent teacher strike, aimed at improving conditions for both teachers and students, has led to unavoidable disruptions in Alberta’s education system. However, the current education framework lacks the flexibility to support students during these unexpected situations, leaving many feeling underprepared for the upcoming January 2026 diploma exams.

Diploma exams, which contribute heavily to final grades, are crucial for students' academic future, university admissions, and scholarship opportunities. However, the strike has put undue pressure on students, many of whom feel unprepared and anxious about their performance on these crucial tests.

It’s important to recognize that teachers are advocating for a better learning environment for all students. The current situation is not the fault of either students or teachers — both have been affected by circumstances beyond their control. However, students now face additional pressure as they prepare for the upcoming diploma exams.

The Alberta Ministry of Education needs to take immediate action to address these inequities. By making the January 2026 diploma exams optional, the Ministry can ensure that students are evaluated in a manner that reflects their true capabilities, without the added pressure of a high-stakes exam following a period of disrupted learning.

Please join us in urging the Alberta Ministry of Education to prioritize the well-being and future of students by signing this petition. Let's give students  the fair opportunity they deserve during these unprecedented times
