Make it right, Mikaela
Make it right, Mikaela
The Issue
Mikaela Hondros-McCarthy is engaging in a retaliatory eviction against her tenant of thirteen years, Tina Degree. During that time, Mikaela raised the rent, but refused to complete needed repairs to keep the building up to code, causing numerous hazards for Tina and her grandchildren, who live with her.
Tina is a a beloved community activist and grandmother who became disabled after a fall caused by Mikaela's negligence. Tina was so injured that she needed surgery, and is still struggling to regain her mobility enough to return to work as a PCA. Usually, when someone is injured because of a property owner's negligence, their homeowner's insurance covers their medical bills and lost wages. Except Mikaela also neglected to maintain state-mandated homeowner's insurance.
Instead of making it right, Mikaela began eviction proceedings against Tina. Now, she is evicting Tina and her family, effectively making Tina and her toddler-aged grandchildren homeless. Mikaela also showed a pattern of racist discrimination and hostility against Tina. Mikaela and her family own over 10 properties in Lowell, and the show the same pattern of negligence, disrespect and prioritizing profits over hardworking families.
But Mikaela picked the wrong target. Tina's community has her back, and we will not let you continue to harm her and her grandchildren.
Mikaela, we demand that you:
- Stop the eviction and allow Tina and her family to remain in their home until they can locate new housing and save up money for moving costs
- Remove the eviction from Tina’s record and her son’s record
- Provide homeowner’s insurance information and accurate records of rent received
- Respond to and communicate with Tina’s lawyer
- Negotiate a fair settlement for Tina’s injuries caused by your negligence and failure to remedy code violations, to include medical bills, ongoing pain and suffering, missed work.
We see you, Mikaela. Your pattern of negligence, racism and heartlessness ends today.
We stand with Tina and her family.
