Make it illegal to leave dogs in hot cars

Make it illegal to leave dogs in hot cars
The Issue
As a devoted dog lover, I cannot stand the thought of a dog suffering. I have sadly witnessed several people over the years leave their dogs in this dangerous situation and it needs to stop. No dog should die from owner ignorance. It is cruel and it is not right.
Dogs are incredibly vulnerable creatures, especially in confined spaces like cars, where temperatures can soar to life-threatening levels in a very short time. Scientific studies have shown that when the ambient temperature is a mere 22 degrees Celsius, the interior of a car can quickly reach up to 47 degrees Celsius within an hour.
The law currently does not offer enough protection for these innocent animals. Although the law in the UK currently has the ability to prosecute owners under section 17 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE), this is not currently working in many police forces across the country, I believe that by making this specific incident illegal, it would support lengthier/tougher sentences/punishments, but more so it would give the public support to know the police would back them in this scenario.
Many dog owners are unaware of the dangers and unintentionally place their pets in harm's way. By setting a clear legal standard that makes it illegal to leave a dog in a car when the temperature is above 22 degrees Celsius, we can save countless lives and take a stand against animal cruelty.
Alongside this, there should be clear public awareness campaigns to educate all pet owners about the risks, signs, and preventative measures, ensuring that everyone understands the gravity of leaving a dog in a hot car. Such a regulation will empower citizens to take decisive action when they see an animal in distress, knowing they are backed by law.
Many regions have successfully enacted similar laws, significantly reducing the number of pets suffering from heatstroke and other heat-related conditions. There is no reason we cannot follow suit and protect our furry friends.
Join me in advocating for our canine companions who cannot speak for themselves. Let's create a safer environment for dogs across the nation. Please sign this petition today to urge lawmakers to make it illegal to leave a dog in a car when the temperature exceeds 22 degrees Celsius. Together, we can prevent unnecessary suffering and safeguard the well-being of our beloved pets.
