Insurance Should Cover Real Healing for Anxiety/Depression — Not Just Pills

Every day, millions of people are told that the only answer to their anxiety and depression is medication or short-term talk therapy. But for so many, these options don’t bring lasting relief.

I know because I was one of them.

For years, I did everything the system told me to do. I took the pills. I showed up for the sessions. I tried to “think positive” and “manage my thoughts.” But none of it touched the deeper pain — the ache that lived beneath the surface. I was still waking up with anxiety that felt like it owned me. I was still battling depression that no amount of medication could silence. And I was still believing something was wrong with me because nothing was working.

It wasn’t until I discovered what traditional care had completely ignored — the trauma buried in my body — that everything changed. Anxiety isn’t a “thinking problem.” It’s often the body’s memory of unprocessed pain. It’s the result of grief, abandonment, shame, and fear that never got a voice. True healing requires more than positive thinking or a prescription. It requires safe, evidence-based approaches that help us process those wounds — methods like:

  • Somatic Experiencing
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
  • Breathwork
  • Trauma-informed therapy
  • NLP
  • Tapping (TFT, EFT, FasterEFT)
  • MCBT
  • Rewind Work
  • Life Coaching

These aren’t fringe ideas — they’re science-backed approaches that have helped countless people, including me, finally find freedom from the pain beneath their anxiety. But here’s the problem: insurance companies rarely cover them. That means only those who can afford to pay out-of-pocket ever get access. Healing shouldn’t be a privilege for the few. It should be a right for everyone struggling with anxiety.

We are calling on insurance providers and policymakers to:

  1. Expand coverage for trauma-informed and body-based anxiety treatments.
  2. Update mental health policies to reflect the latest research on how trauma impacts the body and nervous system.
  3. Give patients choice in their healing, beyond medication-only options.

I know firsthand how painful it is to try “everything” and still feel broken. I spent decades believing I was the problem when, in reality, the system was failing me. It wasn’t until I began healing the trauma beneath my anxiety that I finally felt whole again.

No one should be left suffering because their insurance company doesn’t recognize what science already shows: true healing is possible.

If you believe every person deserves access to real healing — not just symptom management — please sign and share this petition. Together, we can push for change in how anxiety is treated across the country.
