In December 2024 I was being served reels on Instagram relating to riots in the UK. Regardless of my political viewpoint, the seemingly ‘timeless’ presentation of the posts gave a sense of immediate and impending crisis. It was near impossible to search out the date of the posts to understand whether I was seeing something from today, last week or in many actual cases months ago. These posts were being served based on their popularity and perhaps some calculation on my interest. We all understand the need for people to be able to critically analyse this media and adding the date should be a very basic and fundamental requirement for this important task regardless of whether it unveils the lack of depth of the social media companies, in this case, Instagram. I am not affiliated with either the left or the right and am simply trying to protect against extremism with this petition. Our government should not tell the media what to say but should uphold certain journalistic standards when the media presents to us.
