On 9th August 2020 Sakshi (M-8527553302) a caregiver was stopped from feeding the dogs of R.K. Puram Sector 9. She was not only physically assualted by the residents but even the police stood as mere spectator. In fact the police asked Sakshi not to come to feed and the IO even threatened her that if she doesnt stop coming then she will be falsely charged with theft.
Two big dogs had already been poisoned by the residents and according to Sakshi the postmortem report of the dogs also established death due to poisoning. The unfortunate series of dogs dying, mental harassment, abuses and physical assualt on Sakshi started from.4th August 2020 and it finally ended on 13th August 2020 when the former Union Minister and the founder of PFA Maneka Gandhi intervened. She not only gave strength to Sakshi to re start feeding but also gave her full assuarance that she is always there to help her and protect her. And soon after Sakshi also received a call from the SHO of RK Puram police station who told her to restart feeding.
Out of the nine dogs Sakshi used to feed 2 big dogs and 3 pups have already died in the span of ten days. The 3 pups died when Sakshi was stopped from feeding the dogs. She was not allowed to even give medicine to them. Now who is responsible for the death of thise pups? The residents who stopped Sakshi from giving them food and medicine or the police who by law were to safeguard the dogs and the caregivers but instead became a party to the crime.
There are two more pups who are sick and need a foster home. One of them is with a good hearted caregiver and the other is still on the road battling hard against death.
Today on 13th August Sakshi went to feed the dogs after a gap of several days. The dogs looked scared but she was able to feed the dogs. The sick pup had high temperature and was not eating so she took him to a vet (pic in the post). According to the vet he has heartworm and he can recover but he needs a foster home. Sakshi is trying her best to find a foster. Let's hope and pray she gets one.
Sakshi and her dogs have gone through hell for the past nine days. If only the police was a little supportive and did their duty of protecting the laws of India then probably all this could have been easily avoided.
Bhavna a young girl from East Delhi also went through a similar experience on 9th August 2020. She and her friends were manhandled by a resident for feeding the dogs. Bhavna not only feeds the dogs of her area but also tries to get the dogs sterilized and adopted. But all her hard work has neither been appreciated not acknowledged. This is the sad reality of almost all the caregivers of India. In this case again PFA intervened and threatened the resident of legal action if he again tries to manhandle Bhavna or tries to harm the dogs of the neighbourhood. Today Bhavna feels safe because there is someone supporting her and helping her to feed the dogs and taking care of them without any fear.
When will our system work without any biases and prejudices?
Either the Delhi police is unaware about dog rules which clearly says that dogs cannot be relocated, they cannot be killed and any form of cruelty towards them is a punishable offence. Also as per law no one can stop the caregivers from taking care of community dogs.
Or the police is aware of laws but chooses to turn a blind eye because their personal biases stops them from helping the caregivers and the dogs.
It's time the Delhi police change its ways. Law is above every citizen of India and in implementing laws no personal biases and prejudices should come in its way.
