Recent events confirm that safety risks at the Cox Creek intersection (Hwy 6 & Wellington 22) remain active and unresolved — including during the period in which the MTO has indicated it is monitoring conditions.

On Friday, January 30, 2026, multiple serious incidents occurred at or near the intersection:

  • Two separate collisions were reported at the intersection on the same day — one in the morning and one later in the afternoon. Details of the second collision are still being gathered.
  • A near-miss involving a school bus carrying children occurred in the early evening. A vehicle turning right from Nichol 8 (Wellington 22 becomes Nichol 8 on the West side of Hwy 6,) misjudged the available gap and entered Highway 6. Unable to accelerate to highway speed quickly enough, the driver moved into the left lane to avoid being rear-ended by the school bus. The children on that bus were returning to a Guelph school after a school trip and had earlier passed one of the day’s collisions while travelling through the same intersection.

In addition, long-time residents of the area have come forward to share relevant historical context. They say,:

  • Prior to widening, Highway 6 had single northbound and southbound lanes, with longer sightlines that allowed drivers more time to assess oncoming traffic.
  • Following widening, residents report reduced visibility to the north, a higher roadway crest, and more lanes to cross, all of which decrease decision-making time for drivers entering or crossing Highway 6.
  • Multiple residents independently report that collision frequency increased after widening, and that many began avoiding the intersection because it no longer felt safe.
  • These observations raise serious concerns about how roadway design, sightlines, and operating speeds interact at this location — and reinforce the need for interim safety measures that reduce risk now.

This timeline update is provided to document recent events and lived experience shared by the community. It underscores the urgency of implementing readily available interim safety measures while longer-term changes remain pending.
